Sikkim supports at least 4000 species of flowering plants. Two taxa,
however, the genus Rhododendron (45 Species/100 genera family Orchidaceous
(450 Species/100 genera in Sikkim, 20 species threatened),have attracted
the most attention from naturalists, primarily because they produce attractive
flowers in many colours and shapes. Sikkim supports 9 conifer species (rich by the standards
of the HER) and 300 species of pteridophutes (ferns and fern allies).
Numerous medicinal plants species also occur in Sikkim.
