The pattern of urbanisation has thrown many opportunities as well as challenges to both policy-makers, planners, administrators and crisis managers. It has created problems of land management, shelter, provision of basic needs like water, sanitation, health, education etc. Governance has become a major challenge. Shortage of land leads to price escalation besides distortions in land and housing markets. Serious problems arise in efficient and economic use of urban land due to a variety of regulations.
