Types Of Rocks

VOLCANIC ROCKS are found in our state in Valigullu in Cuddapah district, Anantapur district, Chittoor district, Gadwal in Mahboobnagar and also in Khammam district. Volcanic rocks are also present in Vemula and Pulivendela, Tadipatri in Anantapur district and Zaheerabad.

CHARNACOLITES are light olive green in colour and take good polish. They are used as tomb stones. They are mainly located at Kondapalli in Krishna district.

GRANITE ROCKS are the basement rocks, found in peninusular unclassified crystalline complex of our state constituting Chittoor, Anantapur, Kurnool, Cuddapah and Telangana regions. The difference between a Granite stone and a Gneiss stone is that the banding is more in case of Gneiss and less in case of Granite.

KURNOOL FORMATIONS are basically limestone rocks, quite abundant in our state. Due to this our state is the backbone of the lime stone industry. Around 1000 million tonnes of cement is found in Cuddapah, Nalgonda, Guntur, and Krishna districts. Their equivalents in time series are seen in Cherla in Khammam and also Adilabad districts.

DOLOMITES are associated with Cuddapah formations belonging to the Upper Precambrian to Early Cambrian periods. Flux grade dolomite is used in metallurgy in steel making. The best grade dolomite in the country is found at Khammam.

CUDDAPAH STONES are one of the rock types found in the Cuddapah basin. Quartzites, dolomites and shales are the other rock types found in the Cuddapah basin. They are intruded by basic dykes which are black rocks intruding into other rocks. Dykes fetch about 1000 crore rupees in foreign exchange and form a bulk of diamond stone industry.

Cuddapah stones are basically a type of granite. The bronzite mineral present in this granite does not get tarnished. As a result, it has an appearance of a galaxy. It is this quality of Cuddapah stones which makes it world famous. One cubic metre of Cuddapah Stone is worth $3800 (Rs. 1,52,000 approx) at the site because it is the only one of its kind found any where in the world.
