In our state, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada are the important
centres for medical services. They have also been found to be generators
of huge quantities of medical wastes. It has been found that hospitals
in urban centres generate greater quantity of wastes than the rural centres.
Another curious finding has been that corporate and expensive hospitals
generate greater quantities of wastes compared to others.
The problem has indeed acquired gigantic proportions. Strange though it
may sound, it can easily be said that hospitals today can generate as
much infectious diseases as they can cure, in terms of unsafe disposal
methods being followed.
