Response

In the 52 towns with solid waste generation of less than 50 tonnes / day an action plan has been drafted which proposes to organise and aim for 100 percent house to house collection as well as a massive awareness campaign. Segregation of waste is to be encouraged. Conveniently designed storage facilities have to be set up and maintained in a hygienic state. Wastes should be processed by composting. Suitable landfill sites need to be identified for this purpose. Vermicomposting movement will provide great succour for the already pressurised municipal infrastructure. Non power intensive simple sand bed based technologies need to be introduced for sewage treatment.

The already over burdened urban infrastructure needs to understand and strengthen the 'Organic' linkage between rainwater harvesting, multiculture plantation and vermicomposting.
