RELOCATION OF INDUSTRIES

Sociological studies have shown that the settlement of colonies occurs based on certain motivating factors. Whereas initially, when the industrial estates were setup, there was no habitation in the vicinity of these areas, residential colonies developed subsequently. Now several such colonies exist abutting and engulfing upon most of the industrial areas.

None of the industrial estates are sewered. Partially treated or un-treated effluents find their way into natural water courses polluting both surface and ground water.

A majority of these industries are pharmaceutical, chemical, leather, oil mills and some are engaged in lead extraction. These units process and discharge high organic and heavy metal loads into soil and water. Similarly, there are industries that cause air pollution. Some such units are rice mills, parboiled rice mills, saw mills, lead extraction/battery units and plastic industries. Many industries also generate hazardous solid wastes.

Identifying the polluting/hazardous industries and relocating them outside the city limits is advisable. This should be done along with extending appropriate incentives to the relocating industries. The areas thus made available after relocation of industries should be earmarked for creating a buffer zone of green areas.
