The primary reasons for increase in bio-medical wastes can be attributed
to increase in population, industrialisation and increased awareness of
the medical needs.
Further, recent trend in medical practices such as use of disposable plastics
as opposed to reuse of sterilised glass syringes, bottles and other material
has also increased the quantity of medical wastes to a large extent. Another,
clear reason for greater quantity of waste generation is the improved
quality of life of the people.
