The primary reason for such high quantities of hazardous waste generation
in our state can be attributed to the high industrialization in the state
over the last few decades. The major industrial zones are also the commercial
centres of the state and thus have been generating more quantities of
wastes. Hyderabad, being the capital city of the state has attracted major
public sector establishments like the BHEL, Praga Tools, HMT, IDPL, Hindustan
Aeronautics, ECIL, BDL and so on. These units have also played a major
role in the growth of ancillaries and support units in and around Hyderabad.
Another reason for the spurt in hazardous waste generation in the state
is the growth of the chemical and bulk drug industry in and around Hyderabad.
In fact, the city has almost become the bulk drug capital of the country.
Resultantly, it is also the place where high quantities of hazardous wastes
get generated.
At Visakhapatnam, the natural harbour which started its commercial operations in 1932 has paved way for the development of port based industries. The following major units have been the primary reason for industrialization in Visakhapatnam. Hindustan Shipyard, HPCL, Coromandel Fertilizers, Hindustan Zinc, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Naval Dockyard, Andhra Petro Chemicals, Essar Gujarat and recently LG Polymers. After industrial liberalisation, more industries have been set up. While some more are planned to be set up in the zone due to proximity to the thriving port. The backward district of Srikakulam is attracting industrialisation due to proximity to the city. |
