Plastic as Solid Waste

Domestic refuse is a principal contribution of plastic to solid waste. The percentage of its use is rapidly increasing, hence the health implications are also of growing concern. As more plastic materials- containers and industrial components come into use, pressure on their reclamation grows.

The source of plastic materials could be any of the following: Bags, wrappers, records, dishes, pens, appliance cases, brushes and combs, luggage, rain gear, apparel, shoes, floor covering, packaging etc.

Indiscriminate and increasing use of polybags not only chokes drains and wraps the soil, they also emit chemical fumes and are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

All plastics emit fumes, whether detectable or not. However when soft plastics-the variety used to make polybags-are heated they release even more harmful carcinogenic fumes (dioxins and furons) which migrate into food with high fat content. All pigments used for colouring the bags leach on the food.
