NON-CONVENTIONAL SOURCE OF ENERGY

The shortages of fuel based energy and its impact on ecology have led to a search for non-conventional sources of energy. The search, though of recent origin, has been going on strong with sporadic successes already noticed. Small capacities of wood gassifiers, photovoltaic solar systems and wind batteries have been commissioned. Devices like solar cookers, solar pumps, electric vehicles have tremendous potential and need to be given a thrust.

Biomass is defined as the weight of all living organisms in a given population, inclusive of area, volume or other units being measured. Plant biomass provides the primary energy sources and acts as the foundation for all life forms. It is an important and major source of food for us, fodder for livestock, timber for housing and furniture and many other products needed for human existence in the world over. In addition, it contributes to the daily fuel needs of a major portion of the population in the developing world. Almost 70% of India's growing population lives in the rural areas and biomass plays an intimate role in their everyday life. A variety of biomass - based products ranging from rare local specific herbs and leaves for food, medicine, fodder and manure, to thatch for roofing and wood as cooking fuel are used by the tribal and rural folk for basic sustenance. Biogas plants are also becoming popular. In addition, biomass - related activities are the biggest source of employment and income for the rural people.
