GROWTH IN A SUSTAINABLE MODE

The new industrial policy is aimed at providing growth but only in a sustainable mode.

As the VISION 2020 document states, in the last four decades, many parameters have shown change in our state. The per capita income rose by 62 percent, energy generation represented by installed capacity went up by nearly 25 times.

The number of industrial units (registered under the Factories Act) of all sizes went up by six times. Similarly, the capacity of ports increased by (Visakhapatnam Port) 17 times from 1.5 million tonnes in 1956-57 to 26 million tonnes in 1993-94. The road length increased from 17,000 km in 1957 to 51,400 km in 1995. Rail length (Broadguage) went up by 48 percent. The industrial growth in our state, however, has shown a nodal-centripetal trend which is not in keeping with the distributed natural resources base on which it depends.
