GROSSLY POLLUTING INDUSTRIES

The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB) has identified about 60 major grossly polluting industries in the state, which discharge their effluents into rivers and lakes. Among them about 19 industries have complied to the directions issued by the Pollution Control Board i.e. pre treatment of the waste / effluent prior to discharge. Fourteen defaulting industries, being sick units have been closed. The remaining 27 industries still are defaulters.

The criteria for GPI or grossly polluting industries are as :-
A - Industries discharging effluents into rivers and lakes whether directly or indirectly having BOD load of 100 kg. or more
B - Industrial effluents containing toxicants having the effluent quality 2 kld or more and discharge either directly or indirectly into rivers and lakes.
C - Thermal power plants and coal washeries.
D - A CETP or a cluster of industry proposed to be covered under a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP).

Most defaulting industries are of 'D' category.

The basic principles of treatment in a CETP are

  1. Separation of solids from the liquid
  2. Oxidation of organic and oxygen demanding materials
  3. Neutralization
  4. Removal of poisonous substances.
  5. Disposal of residues.

The CETPs are expected to help the cluster of industries in the area to treat their waste water in a cost effective way.
