Pollution of Coastal Waters
Major source of pollutants in coastal waters of our state is due to

  1. Municipal wastewater from urban areas
  2. Industrial discharges
  3. Agricultural runoff and
  4. Spillage of offshore oil exploration and production and shipping.

The Central Pollution Control Board estimated the total waste generation in the coastal regions of our state and published it during 1996. (Series.COPOS/9/1995/96). It was reported that the total solid waste generated in the coastal areas is to the tune of 7,191 tonnes per day. While the effluents generated are 24,66,114 m3 /day which includes 21,16,136 m3/pay from the aquafarms.

Once the discharges enter the wetland area they are partially filtered by the wetlands. The magnitude of this filtering depends on the size of the wetland. Where there are no wetlands the pollutants are discharged directly into the lagoon cells and further into the shelf water cells. In addition oil is discharged from the shipping and oil related industries resulting in pollution and bioaccummulation of heavy metals and synthetic compounds.
