Drainage and Floods The presence of two mighty river systems converging at a single point close to each other has posed several problems of drainage and floods in the delta regions. The flat, even and low lie of the land, where, at places it is even lower than the sea level, has been partly responsible for causing floods and problems of inundation. These mainly occur when both the river systems are full and the sea is rough as a result of atmospheric changes and therefore unable to receive the river waters. There are also other man-made causes such as poor maintenance of the river embankments, which are either under encroachment or in occupation of river beds and drains, narrowing the water flow path. Active deforestation and cultivation in the upstream also causes heavy transportation of sediments. Thus, environmental as well human induced activities have together contributed to create the problems of floods during the monsoon periods causing heavy loss to crops and thereby adversely affecting the economic conditions of the farmers in the shore area. |
