Salinisation of water Resources

Huge quantities of freshwater is required for corporate aquaculture farms in order to dilute the sea water (salinity around 25,000 mg/l). This will result in converting the precious and scarce freshwater into saline water. Further uncontrolled abstraction of groundwater for aquaculture farming may result in:

  • Lowering of the water table creating problems from the point of view of irrigation and drinking water requirements
  • Salinisation of underground fresh water aquifers due to sea water intrusion and
  • Land subsidence due to rapid depletion of groundwater table.
