Salinisation and Conversion of Agricultural Land Aquaculture farming involves storage of large volumes of saline water on land. This may cause dispersion of salts into land area in and around the farms, making them saline, and unfit for any other agricultural purpose. Further, in their avarice, agricultural land owners do not hesitate to convert their land into aquaculture farms. Moreover, in many cases of largescale aquaculture units located far beyond the Coastal Regulation Zone, the sea water is being pumped well inside the hinterland. This will pose a potential danger of contamination to ground water as well as soil salinisation. Thus, limited productive land resource will be progressively rendered saline. |
