Effect on Biodiversity

Many of the aquaculture farms use the naturally available shrimp/prawns larvae as their seeds. According to an estimate, for every one kg of natural tiger shrimp larvae collected, about 10 kg of other varieties of fish and shrimps are killed. It is needless to emphasize the effect of a largescale aquaculture farm using natural seeds on the bio-diversity of the area.

Considering the environmental damages of aquaculture practices, the Supreme Court of India banned aquaculture within CRZ (W.P.No.561/94) and entrusted the job of issuing clearances to the farms existing / proposed outside the CRZ, to the Central Aquaculture Authority constituted as per the directions of the Supreme Court with headquarters at Chennai. The task of implementing other directions in the above case was also assigned to this authority.
