Marshes, Swamps AND Backwaters

The most productive section of the coastal zone with high ecological value, are the marshes, and the swamps which provide refuge to marine wildlife. The slow but vital water circulation pattern and tidal mode of silt bottom cause pollutants to enter the eco-system and remain in the sediments for long periods. It is for this reason that protection of these natural systems is very vital.
