Deltas

Deltas of major rivers along the coast form an important land form. These deltas are laid down by the rivers Krishna, Godavari and Penna which have several paleo channels which are important from groundwater point of view.

Godavari river delta is the largest. The Krishna river delta is also quite large but not so symmetrically disposed as the Godavari delta.

The Pennar river delta is comparatively smaller and has a single channel but several paleo channels. The paleo channel regime and the present cultivation activity have masked the boundary of the delta.

All these deltas comprise unconsolidated fluvial material, which is fertile and hence intensively cultivated. Due to this intense anthropogenic activity, the geomorphic disposition of these deltas has been altered to a great extent. The paleo channels, flood plains and terraces are important from the ground water point of view.
