Beach and Beach ridges

Along the shore line there is an active beach whose width varies from place to place. It comprises loose sand and shingle material. At the periphery of the beach, two types of beach ridges start : (i) complex recent beach ridges and swales forming an alternate sequence of high and low ground and (ii) old beach ridges and swale complex. The elevated beach ridges comprise loose sand silt whereas the low depressions called swales are not suitable for ground water development as they are mostly saline due to submergence of tidal waters.

All along the coast, especially in the delta areas there are several old beach ridges and swale complexes. These have discordant dispositions and most of the ridges have been smothered for cultivation, but still retain their original distribution in small patches. To some extent, the ridge and swale distribution controls the various kinds of land use activity in these areas.
