Responses

The total picture of biodiversity in our state is, one of hope and despair. Hope because a number of species are still extant and can be conserved and revived. Despair because pressures on these are increasing. Responses like protection under Wildlife Protection Act are weakly matched by public awareness of biodiversity.

Documentation and continuing scientific studies have to be helped in a big way. To enable people to appreciate the value of biodiversity and conserve biodiversity, present in groves, forests, wetlands etc., sustainable use of biodiversity alone should be encouraged. Village communities engaged in biodiversity protection should be encouraged to use part of it sustainably through imaginative value addition. Biodiversity registers should be opened at village levels. This would enable ethno-knowledge documentation to enable proper compensation to tribals and others, who help by offering their knowledge for the larger benefit of mankind.

In response to the pressures, on forests for fuel etc; NEDCAP, Andhra Pradesh is acting as the nodal agency for renewable energy programmes sponsored by the Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources, Government of India. These programmes include the National Project on Biogas development, National Programme on improved chulhas, solar energy for solar cookers, domestic lighting systems, street light systems etc., use of wind energy, biomass gasifier system, biomass power generation system etc.
