Storms and Depressions

Excessive rainfall is caused in our state by storms and depressions. They normally affect our state during May (storms) and again during September to November (storms, depressions and cyclones). In September, November floods are likely to occur due to excessive, localised rain. These storms result in widespread and heavy rains in the coastal region, adversely affecting crops. In addition to heavy rainfall storms cause gales with wind speeds reaching 100 to 120 kmph.

The worst-ever cyclone and tidal wave (5 to 6 m. ft) with a gale of 150 kmph. occurred in Diviseema of Krishna district on November 19, 1977. It caused devastation of crops in thousands of hectares and a loss of thousands of human lives and livestock. As opposed to this, Rayalaseema and Telangana regions experience drought once in six years with adverse effect on crop production.
