Effects of Air Pollution on the Respiratory Health in Hyderabad

A study was conducted by the Department of Zoology, Osmania University in 1998, to assess the prevalence of thoracic problems in Hyderabad and study the ventilatory functions in subjects belonging to three sample areas. These, areas were designated as industrial, commercial and residential ones.

Results : A higher prevalence, approximately 30-50% of respiratory symptoms have been reported in the study. Chronic Bronchitis and Asthma patients were higher in the commercial areas. Thoracic and ventilatory abnormalities also have been reported to be higher in the commercial areas. This is associated with the mean and peak levels of SO2 and only the peak levels of NOx.
