National Award for Best ENVIS Center

Background

Recognising the importance of Environmental Information in sound decision-making, the Ministry of Environment & Forests in December 1982 initiated the Environmental Information Systems (ENVIS) as a plan programme. This program envisaged setting up of a comprehensive network of repositories of information in institutions and organisations for collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information on varying subject areas of environment. The development of websites and maintaining of online database were then incorporated in the scheme. It was possible to expand this network with the assistance of multilateral funding agencies.

The Environmental Information System (ENVIS) today is a decentralised system of nationwide network of 85 Nodes of which 55 are subject specific CENTRES and NODES and 30 Government Nodes integrated to collect, collate, and disseminate information on status of ENVIRONMENT. The Centres and Nodes have been set up in the areas of Ecology & Ecosystems, Chemicals, Wastes & Toxicology, Trade & Law, Media, Education & Sustainable Development, Environment and Energy Management, Flora, Fauna & Biodiversity and Status of Environment.
