TRAINING PROGRAM
"Training for ENVIS Nodes on Web Designing and Database Management"
22ND TO 24TH APRIL, 2003, PUNE

Preface

The third Training Programme on Web designing and Database Management was held at Pune between 22nd April and 25th April, 2003. The workshop was organized by Centre for Environment and Education, Pune. A summarized report of the training program is given in the following pages.

Day 1 (Tuesday,22nd April, 2003)

The training program started with a welcome address by Ms. Sanskriti Menon, CEE, who cordially invited all the participants. The training programme was inaugurated by Dr Indrani Chandrashekaran, Director, Ministry of Environment and Forests. Dr. Chandrasekharan briefed the participants about the activities of ENVIS. She informed that ENVIS is now a family of 85 Nodes and 25 Centres and also insisted on the need to create independent website by all the established nodes. Mr. Sanjay Gupta, Information Scientist, ENVIS Secretariat made a presentation on the Ministry of Environment and Forest website (http://envfor.nic.in). Mr. Vimal Bisht, the architecture of ENVIS website highlighted the features of the website (http://www.envis.nic.in). He said that he is open to suggestions on the website.

Session I

Presentation on World Wide Web by Ms.Maitry.

Ms. Maitry from Quantum Technologies gave an introduction to the World Wide Web, front page, different components of HTML and DHTML. Ms. Maitry gave hands on training on how to design a web page using web publishing / web authorizing tool. The session included:

 

  • Introduction to Front page
  • Importing a site into Front Page
  • Creating Hyperlinks
  • Dynamic HTML
  • Creating tables, frames
  • Inserting Symbols, changing fonts, viewing HTML codes etc.

Once the basic knowledge of Web page designing was given, all the participants were asked to design the web page on the subject area allocated to them using graphics, tables, button and texts. Ms. Maitry cleared doubts of the participants on data processing.

Day 2 (Wednesday,23rd April 2003)

Prateek Surana of Quantum Technologies made an interesting presentation on how to design a website. He insisted that while designing the webpage, the web designer has to keep in mind that there should be a balance between the text and graphics to run the site faster. The home page should be interactive enough such that as soon as the end user open the home page, he/she get an idea of the content of the site.

Hands on training on basic design using HTML and DHTML continued.

Post lunch session began with hands on training on Adobe Photoshop. Images and graphics play an important role while developing a web page. The following basic elements of Adobe Photoshop were covered:

a) Introduction to Photoshop: an image editor
b) Functionality of tools in tool box and their properties
c) Editing of image using tool box
d) Concept and creation of layers, actions and history
e) Creation of canvas
f) Merging of different layers

Training on style sheet/image/flash/Java script had following components:

a) Introduction to style sheet
b) How to create style sheet
c) How to allocate different properties like font, color, size and other attributes to tags
d) How to call style sheet from HTML files
e) Introduction to flash and how to make movie clip in flash
f) How to embed flash object in HTML

Basic programming by using Java script was covered. The session on Java script covered introduction to variables and calling functions. The concept of client site and server site was also covered.

Day three (Thursday, 24th April 2003)

The third day of the Training Programme was all about Database Management. Sorting, updating, inserting, deleting and storing of data are of prime importance in Database Management. All these topics were covered in this session. Creation of table and Structured Query Language were taught briefly. The participants had many queries on Data Processing which were answered very efficiently.


Day Four (Friday, 25th April 2003)

Measures suggested by the participants to make the ENVIS network more effective during the concluding session are as follows:

Concluding Session

  • Subject areas should be well defined

  • Training programmes like this should be more practical oriented.

Suggestions made to make the training programs more effective network a sustainable one:

  1. Online training

  2. Training in web related products like Macromedia

  3. Need analysis for training required

  4. Duration of the training should be one week with hands on experience (1/2 classroom & 1/2 practical

  5. Presentations - by the nodes

  6. Presentation of the best and the worst sites

  7. Distribution of required softwares at the training

  8. Workshop on planning for proactive and strategic communication

  9. Workshop on common standards for all the ENVIS Nodes

Suggestions made to make the network a sustainable one:

  1. Common S/W like Mark 21 format could be tested for Database Management (importing and exporting)

  2. Providing practical solutions to environmental problems - cases could be put up on the portal

  3. Comparison of Environmental Information in India and abroad, mailing list serves, download of s/w - on the portal

  4. List of experts to be provided on the portal

  5. E-journals with full text access

  6. Marketing - tie up with universities, research scholars other such networking agencies

  7. Personal logo of each nodes

  8. Standardisation of informations to be put up on a particular subject and also of qualification and salary of the staff

  9. Standardised procedure for refurbishing the contents of SOER and websites and also of database management - ORACLE

  10. Timely disbursement of funds and increasing funds

  11. Mr.Haravu's S/W with international standards - features:

    • Multilingual

    • web enabled

    • online public access module

    • could be fitted into the network

    • could be available free of cost for trials

  12. A common platform for all ENVIS Nodes to interact

  13. ENVIS activity could become a part of the main activity of the organisation
