REPORT ON
TRAINING PROGRAM
"WEB - BASED SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT
AND DATABASE MANAGEMENT"
28TH AND 30TH NOVEMBER, 2002, HYDERABAD

Preface

ENVIS Secretariat sponsored the 1st training program on "Web - Based Systems Development and Database Management" under the EMCTAB - World Bank Project at Hyderabad between 28th and 30th November, 2002. The Environment Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI), Hyderabad has been entrusted to organize the event. There were be 10 technical sessions altogether. A summarized report of the training program is given in the following pages.

Day I (Thursday, 28 November, 2002)

The training programme commenced with a welcome address by Mrs. Uma Maheswari who cordially invited all the participants. The training programme was inaugurated by Dr Indrani Chandrashekaran, Director, Ministry of Environment and Forests. Addressing to all the participants Dr. Chandrashekharan envisioned the diverse characteristic the entire Network and of each Envis node under the Envis family and announced that a new ENVIS portal site will be hosted by January 2003.

Session I

Presentation on Web as a platform for knowledge and information access and dissemination by Mr. L. J. Haravu.

Mr L.J Haravu, information Consultant spoke on the Web as a platform for knowledge and information access and dissemination. The session was an overview of the web-based database that is present in the public for global access. He emphasized on the importance of having a common network for linking the database among all Envis nodes and explained how and why the wide access to data which is not in the public domain can be shared between different Envis centres located across the countries and it other users.

Session II

Presentation on Digital Library by Dr. E.Rami Reddy.

Dr. E.Rami Reddy, Librarian, university of Hyderabad, spoke on the importance of Digital Libraries an emerging technologies: initiatives at university of Hyderabad. During the session the technology and their advantages and disadvantages to other technologies was discussed. This was followed by looking at the web-based systems from the point of users and Liberians. The session also looked at a hypothetical script on how web-based library automation can help promote the network.

Session III

Presentation on Practical aspects of web domain designing, uploading and maintenance by Mr S Manohar Reddy and Mr P. Lovaraju, Saven Technologies

Mr S Manohar Reddy and Mr P. Lovaraju, Saven technologies, presented on the practical aspects of web domain designing, uploading and maintenance. The session covered topics of the basic question one's ask about what is internet and its various application applications.

Session IV

Presentation by the participants - their information resources and how they can be web-enabled

Presentations were made by representatives from ENVIS Nodes of

  • Anna University,

  • NIOH,

  • STEM,

  • Department of Environment - Tamil Nadu

  • Annamalai University

This interactive session made a point of the problems statements faced by the Nodes, which were handled by the officials from the ENVIS Secretariat.

Session V

A visit was made to EPTRI's ENVIS centre to observe the database and web-links maintained by the centre. A small presentation was made by Mr. Baquaer on their ENVIS website. It was followed by refreshment and on behalf of EPTRI Mr. Baquaer presented all the participants with a copy of the proceedings of the National Seminar on Conservation of Eastern Ghats.

Day II (Friday, 29 November, 2002)

Session VI

Presentation on Web-based library automation and Networking by Mr. L. J. Haravu.

The presentation can be summarised as follows:

  • Web-based Library automation system provides on-line catalogue and other library services which the user need.

  • The system integrates principles of librarianship with the web's global network to help create a dynamic, user-driven front-end to any library's set of material.

  • It support a framework for libraries to provide enhanced access to local and remote sets of data, information and knowledge.

Session VII

Presentation on Knowledge Management and Networking by Dr. P. Vyasamurthy

  • Knowledge Management is an emerging set of processes, organizational structures, applications and technologies that aim to leverage the ability of the able, responsible, autonomous individual to act quickly and effectively.

  • Knowledge Management & Knowledge Networking are two different terms.

  • Knowledge Networking is a tool or means to achieve Knowledge Management in a larger scale among institutions of similar nature through greater synergy of operations.

  • ICICI Knowledge Network is a network of premier academic and industrial R & D Institutions which share ideas, knowledge, information about facilities, instruments, expertise, library resource with ICICI Knowledge Park Community

Session VIII

Hands on Training (Front page) at Department of LIS, Osmania University coordinated by Mr S Manohar Reddy and Mr P. Lovaraju, Saven Technologies

A user friendly Web Tool To Design a Web Page. One can easily learn how to design a web site without much assistance. An assignment was given for the participants to try their hands on creating their own web page.

Day III (Saturday, 30 November, 2002)

Session IX

Presentation on "Technologies for we-enabling of databases" by Mr. L. J. Haravu

  • Explaining the importance and advantages of database development and management in the present era, Mr. Haravu described the different softwares available for database development and management.

  • Provided a brief review of the technologies available for web-enabled databases. Some of the technologies described by him are as follows:

    • HTML

    • DGTML

    • CGI

    • DLLs

    • Microsoft Technologies such as Active Server Pages (ASP) etc.

    • Cold Fusion

    • IntraBuilder

    • Visual Café Pro

    • File-Maker Pro

  • Concluded the presentation by explaining the problems a database developer and manager face while developing and maintaining a database.

Session X

Database Management at MANAGE - Presentation by Lakshmi Murthy Assistant Director (Documentation) Manage

  • Presentation on digital library

  • Presentation on web based knowledge networking at MANAGE

  • Major emphasis on discussion forum. Described Majordomo software for managing the database generated in the discussion forum.

  • Presentation on video conferencing

  • Presentation on some web based initiatives taken by MANAGE for the rural women.

Concluding Session

  • Measures suggested by the participants to make the ENVIS network more effective during the concluding session are as follows:

  • Need for having same kind of platform in all the ENVIS Nodes, Centers and Secretariat for developing and maintaining the database was expressed.

  • Subject areas should be well defined

  • Training programmes like this should be more practical oriented.

  • Next training programme should be a follow up of the present training programme.

The training programme ended with the felicitation of all the participants.

Suggestions made to make the training programs more effective network a sustainable one:

  1. Online training

  2. Training in web related products like Macromedia

  3. Need analysis for training required

  4. Duration of the training should be one week with hands on experience (1/2 classroom & 1/2 practical

  5. Presentations - by the nodes

  6. Presentation of the best and the worst sites

  7. Distribution of required softwares at the training

  8. Workshop on planning for proactive and strategic communication

  9. Workshop on common standards for all the ENVIS Nodes

Suggestions made to make the network a sustainable one:

  1. Common S/W like Mark 21 format could be tested for Database Management (importing and exporting)

  2. Providing practical solutions to environmental problems - cases could be put up on the portal

  3. Comparison of Environmental Information in India and abroad, mailing list serves, download of s/w - on the portal

  4. List of experts to be provided on the portal

  5. E-journals with full text access

  6. Marketing - tie up with universities, research scholars other such networking agencies

  7. Personal logo of each nodes

  8. Standardisation of informations to be put up on a particular subject and also of qualification and salary of the staff

  9. Standardised procedure for refurbishing the contents of SOER and websites and also of database management - ORACLE

  10. Timely disbursement of funds and increasing funds

  11. Mr.Haravu's S/W with international standards - features:

    • Multilingual

    • web enabled

    • online public access module

    • could be fitted into the network

    • could be available free of cost for trials

  12. A common platform for all ENVIS Nodes to interact
